About City

Paris's location at a pivotal intersection of marine and land routes important to both France and Europe has had an ongoing impact on its development. The original location on the Île de la Cité was chosen as the capital of the Parisii tribe and area during Roman rule in the first century BCE. By 494 CE, the Frankish monarch Clovis I had conquered Paris from the Gauls and established it as his capital. Hugh Capet (reigned 987-996) and the Capetian dynasty solidified Paris' dominance, making it the political and cultural centre as modern France took shape.
